The receptor for advanced glycation end products（RAGE） is a multi-ligand member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell surface molecules. RAGE/ligand interaction can activate several signal transduction pathways and enhance inflammion. The pathologic expression of RAGE in periodontal tissue indicates RAGE may be the stimulative factor of periodontal inflammation, and possibly involve in the periodontal destruction in diabetes or smokers.
