Lateral occlusion is the contact relationship between upper and lower teeth in laterotrusive movement, which is very important to masticatory function. This article reviewed the new progress of researches on characteristics of lateral occlusal contacts, the effects of lateral occlusion on masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joint and condyle movement and occlusion-related diseases.
