Dental plaque biofilm is one of key etiological factors of dental caries and periodontal diseases, and is also the hotspot of oral microbiology and ecology. Researchers have developed various models to study mechanisms and courses of their formation. The living environment of subgingival plaque and upragingival plaque is obviously different, as well as their incumbent microbial populations. As a result, the model system is different. Supragingival plaque is easy to be collected and the living environment is easy to be simulated. So variety of
models have been applied to research on supragingival plaque bioflims, including in vitro and in vivo models. Research on models of subgingival plaque biofilm is relatively less. The review was presented the research progress
on models of dental plaque biofilm.
