Objective To evaluate the prevalence and intensity of dentine sensitivity(DS) after scaling and root planing. Methods The study was carried out with 38 subjects who had chronic periodontitis requiring for scaling and root planing. DS was scored by the subjects on a 0-10 visual analogue scale(VAS) after cold air stimulation of the test teeth at baseline and 5 minutes after the treatment, 1 week after the treatment and 4 weeks after the treatment. The prevalence and intensity of DS was compared between the baseline and post -treatment. Results There was a significant increase in the prevalence of DS after 1 week after the treatment(52.6%) compared to baseline data(28.9%, P0.05). Conclusion
Scaling and root planing may play a role in the etiology of dentine sensitivity.
