Condylar cartilage is the most important development zone of mandible, the chondrocyte of which grows and differentiates greatly different with the growth plate of long bone. Parathyroid hormone related protein (PTHrP) acts the critical regulating role during the condylar development. As a great promising mediator, parathyroid hormone(PTH) can not be replaced in modifying condylar development artificially. The pleiotropic effects of PTHrP/PTH and the receptor(typeⅠ), which become the focuses of research on mandibular condylar development, are reviewed here.
