Members of the CD44 family of transmembrane glycoproteins, in particular the expression of CD44v6 isoforms correlates with metastasis of various human cancers. There is a consecutive expression of CD44v6 isoforms in malignant tumors, including oral squamous cell carcinoma. It is very important to detect the expression of CD44v6 in cancer tissues in predicting metastasis and prognosis in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. In this review, we summarized the researches progress on CD44 and its relationship with metastasis of oral squamous cell carcinoma to explore its potential value in diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of oral carcinoma.
