Periodontitis is a destructive disease of periodontal tissue caused by microbial infection that often appears as an excessive immunoinflammatory response in local periodontal tissue. There is some evidence in literature supporting the possibility that autoimmunity may be involved in the complex regulation of host immune response in periodontitis. The possible mechanism involves: Activation of B-1 cell, generation of autoantibody and autoreactive T cell and immunostimulation of periodontal pathogen. The article is to review the relationship between autoimmunity and periodontitis.
