Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital craniofacial defects. At present, the optimal approach to treat it is operation. Maxillary retrusion which could be seen in cleft lip and palate patients after palate repair is characterized by the presence of concave profile, anterior crossbite and even psychological problems. Maxillary protraction can cause maxilla to move forward, inhibit mandible to move forward and improve the concave profile by stimulating 4 sutures in maxilla through a facemask. This article is to provide an overview of maxillary protraction in cleft lip and palate patients.
