Long-term application of fluoride results in the generation of fluoride-resistant strains of Streptococcus mutans. Several studies have been conducted worldwide to confirm whether or not changes in cariogenic ability are induced by this mutation and investigate the effectiveness of various fluoride methods in preventing dental caries. This article discusses research progress on the aciduricity, demineralization, acidogenecity, adherence, and glycolytic capacity of fluoride-resistant strains of Streptococcus mutans.
