Fusobacterium nucleatum(F. nucleatum) is a prominent component in dental plaque biofilms. It is also regarded as a key organism for dental plaque biofilm formation, shifts, metabolic exchanges, and horizontal gene transfer. Meanwhile, F. nucleatum is an important pathogen implicated in periodontitis and dental caries, and it acts as a “bridge” of coaggregation between supragingival and subgingival plaque microbiota. In summary, F. nucleatum significantly affects oral health balance. This review focused on F. nucleatum and its role in the ecology of dental plaque biofilms.
