Osteoporosis is a common disease among elderly people. This disease compromises the dental prosthetic effect. Clinical prevention is not ideal because of insufficient understanding of osteoporosis pathogenesis. For ethical reasons, animal models are usually utilized for research. This study reviews the main features of five established rat models of osteoporosis, which will help in establishing an appropriate animal model of osteoporosis.
