Oral mucositis(OM), a common cytotoxic complication in the treatment of head and neck cancers, is a limiting factor for radiotherapy or chemotherapy. By impairing oral function, OM can result in severe pain, affect the intake of nutrition and increase the risk for infections. It may also postpone anti-cancer plans. Reduction strategies for OM are still unclear as these interventions act on different phases of mucositis and are supported by an insufficient amount of evidence. The updated knowledge on these interventions was reviewed.
