Botulinum toxin type A(BTX-A) is a kind of exotoxin produced by the bacteriumClostridium botulinumwhich works by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. Recent studies have found that BTX-A can be used in the oral and maxillofacial plastic surgery and the treatment of some oral diseases, providing a new method and a new direction for alternative treatment of oral diseases. The present review focuses on the mechanism, clinical application in the oral and maxillofacial region, operation cautions, contraindications and treatment of BTX-A.
