Migration inhibitory factor（MIF） is described as a potent pro-inflammatory mediator that inhibited the migration of macrophages, which plays an important role in the regulation of physiological, pathological and immunologic response processes. Special emphasis is placed on the emerging concept that MIF has a central role as a regulator of inflammatory responses, and the implications it might have for the development of periodontal diseases.
