Prediabetes is a metabolic abnormality, and periodontitis is a chronic infection caused by bacteria and is characterized by the destruction of periodontal tissues. Clinical and epidemiological studies show that prediabetes and periodontitis are related. Prediabetes may increase the prevalence rate and severity of periodontitis, and periodontitis could aggravate the severity of prediabetes. Moreover, periodontal therapy could improve the glucose homeostasis of prediabetes. Both diseases may involve oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin(IL)-1β, and IL-6. Obesity and age are common risk factors that promote the onset and development of the two diseases. In this paper, the correlation and interaction mechanism between prediabetes and periodontitis are reviewed.
