ObjectiveTo investigate the blood collection and supply situation of blood collection and supply institutions which from different geographical regions of China in 2012 and 2017.

MethodsA total of 36 blood collection and supply institutions were selected as research subjects, which included 33 blood centers and 3 central blood stations from 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities of China in 2012 and 2017. According to theBlood Collection and Supply Situation Questionnairedesigned in this study, the donation of whole blood and apheresis platelets, and clinical supply of whole blood, apheresis platelets, manual platelets, red blood cell components and plasma in these 36 blood collection and supply institutions in 2012 and 2017 were collected, respectively. According to above indicators, the whole blood donation per capita, apheresis platelet donation per 104population, blood use per capita, apheresis platelet use per 104population, ratio of blood use per capita and whole blood donation per capita, and ratio of apheresis platelet use per 104population and apheresis platelet donation per 104population were calculate respectively, in order to analyze the blood collection and supply situation of blood collection and supply institutions from different geographical regions of China retrospectively.

ResultsCompared with 2017 to 2012, the blood collection and clinical supply in 36 blood collection and supply institutions in this study were as follows. ① The growth rates of whole blood donation, apheresis platelet donation, whole blood donation per capita, and apheresis platelet donation per 104population were 12.8%, 67.5%, 4.0%, 55.0%, respectively. Among the above 4 indicators, the regions with the highest growth rates were Southwest China (34.1%), Northwest China (155.3%), Southwest China(14.0%) and Northwest China (136.0%); the regions with the lowest growth rates were Northwest China (0), Northeast China (34.6%), Northwest China (-6.7%) and Southern China (24.7%), respectively. ② The growth rates of clinical supply of whole blood, red blood cell components, plasma, apheresis platelets, manual platelets, whole blood use per capita, apheresis platelet use per 104population were -75.1%, 18.1%, 20.6%, 69.6%, -22.5%, 8.0% and 64.4%, respectively. Among the above 7 indicators, the regions with the highest growth rates were Northeast China (-53.2%), Central of China (44.5%), Central of China (72.7%), Northwest China (152.4%), Southern China (446.2%), Central of China (28.6%) and Northwest China (132.1%); the regions with the lowest growth rates were Southwest China (-97.4%), Northwest China (1.8%), Northeast China (-2.1%), Northeast China (34.8%), Central of China (-98.5%), Northwest China (-6.7%) and Northeast China (31.9%), respectively. ③ The growth rates of clinical supply of red blood cell components such as washed red blood cells, deglycerolized red blood cells, red blood cells additive solution leukocytes reduced, irradiated red blood cells were 56.6%, -82.1%, 55.1%, -9.3%, respectively. Among the above 4 indicators, the regions with the highest growth rates were Central of China (107.6%), Northwest China (-64.8%), Central of China (337.1%) and Northeast China (284.6%); the regions with the lowest growth rates were North China (28.2%), North China (-92.6%), Northwest China (-1.1%) and Southwest China (-30.0%), respectively. ④ In 2012, the relationship between supply and demand of whole blood nationwide was basically balanced, and the relationship between supply and demand of apheresis platelets nationwide was basically balanced or the supply was greater than the demand. In 2017, the demand of whole blood nationwide was greater than the supply and the supply of apheresis platelets nationwide was greater than the demand.

ConclusionsCompared with 2017 to 2012, the volume of blood collection of blood collection and supply institutions nationwide increased significantly, and clinical supply also increased. In 2017, the relationships between supply and demand of whole blood and apheresis platelets nationwide are contradiction. And there were regional differences in the supply and demand of whole blood and apheresis platelets. Blood collection and supply institutions should continue to take effective measures for publicity of voluntary blood donation and recruitment of blood donors, to increase blood collection. And establish inter-provincial blood redeployed mechanisms, to ensure blood supply for critical patients.
