The function and mechanism of melatonin are current research focus. A number of studies showed that melatonin can promote the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, thereby inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts and inducing the differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts. Melatonin can also inhibit the proliferation of dental papilla cells and promote their differentiation. Melatonin is closely related with teeth and bone diseases. The mechanism may be associated with melatonin receptors and their functional pathways. In this review, we summarise the effects of melatonin on hard tissue and its potential mechanism.
