A projection pursuit dynamic cluster model is developed, and it is used in water resources assessment for the first time.The projection pursuit dynamic cluster model combines projection pursuit principle with dynamic cluster method.Firstly,multifactor assessment problem can be converted into single factor (projected characteristic value) assessment problem according to linear projection.Secondly,a new projection index on the basis of dynamic cluster rule is constructed, which avoids the problem of parameter calibration in the assessment process successfully.In projection pursuit dynamic cluster model, the assessment results obtained from the characteristics of data set are more objective and less subjective.Finally,a case study of water resources assessment is conducted.A comparison of the water resources assessment for river basins along the coast of Liaoning Province shows that the results from the projection pursuit dynamic cluster model are reasonable and effective.The projection pursuit dynamic cluster model is a new method for water resources assessment and also a new approach to multi factor assessment.
