The improvement and extension for critical slip fields of rock slope is performed, in view of the discontinuity of rock. By fully considering the influence of structural surface to the stability of the slope,a new method is proposed for dealing with structural planes, and tensile cracks are readily introduced based on the tensile strength of rock. The improved techniques for constructing critical slip fields of rock slope are incorporated into a computer program. By numerically simulation, the most dangerous sliding surfaces are traced according to the principle of maximum thrusts with satisfaction of both force and moment equilibria, resulting in critical slip surfaces quickly and exactly as well as the corresponding factors of safety. This method has been applied to the stability analysis of five example slopes and a case slope, and the results show its accuracy and high effectiveness in rock slope stability analysis in comparison to other methods.
