In order to efficiently sample the suspended sediment with a low concentration,a three-dimensional simulation design was presented for a new suspended sediment sampler characteristic of a hydrocyclone.Using a Lagrangian approach with fluid multi-phase model, the pressure distribution, fluent flow, and particle trajectory in the inner sampler were three-dimensionally simulated.A laboratory experiment showed that its sediment separation efficiency is up to 85% for the sediment particles with individual grain size of 63 μm,which achieved the rapid in-situ collection of suspended sediment, and the predictions using the three-dimensional simulation are in good agreements with experimental results.
