Compressed Natural Gas(CNG)storage well is an important underground container for energy conservation. According to the characteristics of natural gas storage wells in service, a human-computer interaction system for corrosion detection of the CNG wells wall was presented, which consists of an underground test unit and a ground control unit. In the corrosion inspection, the ultrosonic probes and the camera of the system could rise and rotate along with the wall of the CNG well for the acquisition of corrosion information. At the same time, the users could observe, analyze, and record the wall thickness and corrosion images and online control the corrosion inspection of the ultrasonic system and imaging system by the computer on the ground. The detection scheme and working principle of the system were described in detail, especially acquisition and transmission of the ultrosonic data,as well as hardware and software design of both ultrasonic detection subsystem and underground imaging subsystem. The laboratory and field experiments indicated that the system speed and accuracy can meet the test requirements. The system provided a new technique for the corrosion inspection of CNG wells in China.
