Based upon cell circulation and product recovery,a silicone rubber (PDMS) membrane bioreactor system was built, and ferment experiments for apple juice were carried out with this system. Acclimatizing cultures were conducted, and a preferential strain was isolated from three yeast microbes.Ferment and pervaporation coupling experiments at 25 ℃ showed that the inoculating strain in apple juice grew up to a cell concentration of 108/ml in initial 24 h,and the products extraction by pervaporation enhanced the microbial growth. After fermenting for 96 h,the utilizable saccharide in the broth decreased down to 4%. The permeate collection at the down stream of the membrane had an alcohol concentration up to 28%. The permeation flux penetrating the membrane was around 1000 g/(m2·h). Scale-up tests were done with a different module of larger membrane area. The PDMS membrane bioreactor system was a prospective technology for the production of apple brandy and non alcoholic beverage by fermentation of apple juice.
