中西方传统的语言观都认为,语言是表达主观意愿或反映客观世界的工具。随着西方哲学史的演进,语言在现代西方成为了本体的存在。当代西方的后现代主义哲学强调语言的"不确定性",但作为后现代诗人,美国当代投射派诗歌的领袖查尔斯·奥尔森似乎并不强调语言的不确定性,而只是坚持语言是当下经验。通过分析奥尔森的相关言论可以发现,他强调语言是当下经验,是试图修复思维和行动(或经验)之间以及符号与意义之间的裂痕。他通过恢复语言中的"呼吸"使之回归经验。奥尔森的语言观在诗学传统上和庞德、威廉斯的观点一脉相承,同时也和维特根斯坦、海德格尔、怀特海以及杜威的哲学思想有诸多相似之处,但他对语言的信任却明显有别于后现代主义者对语言的怀疑,这在后现代语境中可谓是独树一帜。
