美国比较文学学者与汉学家苏源熙将以余宝琳为代表的汉学家有关"中国讽寓"辞格的研究概括为文化相对主义诗学,而汉学家对此的回应则再次强调了中国文学术语自身的特殊性。双方都指责对方犯了欧洲中心主义的错误,论争焦点实则在于中西比较赖以进行的基础———比较双方的共性并非是现成的,而是逐渐在比较中显现出来的。对于比较而言,共性与个性缺一不可。而文化相对主义对于"异"的过度夸大将导致无效的比较。
