Syndecan-4, a newly discovered peptide, which distributes in many tissues, mediates a variety of physiological responses. A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif-1(ADAMTS-1), a novel metalloproteinase, is widely expressed in mammals and invertebrates cells. ADAMTS-1 plays a key role in physiology and pathology process such as maintaining coagulation system steady, organ formation, inflammation, reproduction. Many studies have shown that syndecan-4 and ADAMTS-1 are involved in the wound healing, and found that ADAMTS-1 is uniquely cleave the transmembrane proteoglycan syndecan-4. This review is about the structure, properties of the syndecan-4 and ADAMTS-1, and the role of them in wound healing. The purpose is to provide a theoretical basis for periodontal regeneration.
