Hypertension is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases related to genetic and environmental factors. Periodontitis is a destructive disease in teeth supporting tissue(gum, periodontal membrane and alveolar bone). Many researches show that hypertension and periodontitis are related. Periodontitis could increase the prevalence rate of hypertension, while hypertension might increase the risk and severity of periodontitis. At present, the inter-nal mechanism of the interaction between them has not been entirely clarified. Inflammation is probably the mediator and common risk factors promote coincidence of the two diseases. In this paper, the correlation and the interactive mechanism between periodontitis and hypertension will be reviewed.
