Root canal treatment is necessary when apical periodontitis occurs in teeth with pulpal obliteration or dens invaginatus. Determining the accurate location of root canal and the path of preparation is one of the most common challenges in clinical practice. Digital template based on cone beam-computed tomography, digital design software, and 3D printing allows a minimal invasive access and location of root canal and thus preserves tooth structures and improves the success rate of root canal therapy. In this review, we summarized the background, current developments, manufacture method, accuracy, and clinical application of digital templates for root canal location.
