Ankyloglossia is a common congenital oral disformity. The abnormal of lingual frenulum or speech act as the indication of frenotomy in clinical treatment mostly, but literatures show ankyloglossia isn’t directly related to speech. So, the risk of excessive operation exists if the abnormal of lingual frenulum or speech were applied as the indication of frenotomy. Breastfeeding plays an important role in infant growth, in recent years, ankyloglossia with nipple pain, trauma and even affected growth of infant get more attention with the advocating of breastfeeding. We retrospect researches about the relationship between ankyloglossia and breastfeeding difficulties, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment in this review, emphasizing the relationship between the tongue tie and breastfeeding and then sum up the surgical indications of ankyloglossia, it is expected to provide a new guidance standard for clinical work.
