According to Mannich reaction mechanism, octodecyl amine methyl rutin (RuC18) was synthesized by using microwave-assisted method and water-bath process, respectively. Rutin, octadecylamine and formaldehyde were used as raw material, and methanol as solvent. The effect of these two synthesis methods on reaction rate and productivity was investigated. In water-bath process, productivity can reach 11.2%, while mole ratio of rutin, octadecylamine and formaldehyde is 1∶2∶12, and pH value ranges from 4.2 to 4.5, and reaction temperature is 75 ℃. In microwave-assisted synthesis, the productivity is about 18.9% with the microwave power of 150 watts and reaction time of 8 minutes. RuC18 structure is detected by using FT-IR and nuclear magnetic resonance. It was found that the unimolecular substitution reaction occurs in C8position of heterocyclic ring "A".
