作为美国南方20世纪初重要的社会话语,南方重农主义旨在建立同北方工业资本主义和新南方教条不同的话语结构,以传统和文化作为价值取向的标准。重农主义的出现是社会语境作用的结果,其话语模式分为"雄辩型"和"内省型":雄辩型为南方农业文明辩护,认为现代社会导致了事实和价值、文化和经济活动的分离;而内省型却暴露了重农主义者内部的矛盾,他们对南方不同的定义以及互相冲突的话语规则。两种话语模式之间的矛盾和关联使重农主义话语最终为现代话语系统所遏制,并将南方生活中南北文化的差异变成历史的距离,简单化为现实同过去的区别。重农主义话语的两种模式开启了南方多元历史叙事,具有重要的社会意义。
