虽然短篇小说这种文学形式的历史较短,它的发展仍可分为三个不同阶段,即:传统阶段,现代阶段、当代阶段。凯瑟琳·曼斯菲尔德(Katherine Mansfield)同凯瑟琳·安·波特(Katherine Anne Porter)都属于现代阶段。曼斯菲尔德从题材和写作技巧方面对传统短篇小说进行了改革,是西方现代短篇小说的奠基人之一。波特在短篇小说创作中,也达到了相当高的境界,她和她同时代优秀作家的作品,使现代短篇小说创作到达了顶峰。
