The condition of peri-implant soft tissue is closely related to the outcome of dental implant. However, many problems concerning soft tissue defects may occur after dental implantation. Subepithelial connective tissue grafting is a common technique for soft tissue augmentation in clinical practice and solution to many problems of soft tissue deficiency in oral treatment. This review summarized the donor sites and histological characteristics of corresponding grafts, harvesting techniques, recipient site preparation techniques, clinical effects and development directions of subepithelial connective tissue grafting.
